No matter where you go in the world, common sense should prevail. Having just returned from Madrid, where reports of muggings are rife, I did not see or hear of anything bad. There are many beggars on the streets and no doubt many are genuine, but some were constantly pestering you every few minutes. One elderly lady, well dressed, approached me and asked for spare pesatas, when I said no, she pointed to my purse (handbag) and said give me pesatas now, I quickly walked away into a nearby store. All in all I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and never felt threatened by anyone. Smiler

I love spain

Hi Mad-Sue, jer here. Thanks for reporting back after yuor trip. As for the beggars, this is the norm in Madrid as of many years ago, violent crime against visitors is almost non-existant and Madrid is still one of the most amiable cities in all of Europe. The homeless and beggars and such are going to ask for a handout as in any city or country inthe world but they usually do not push it if you say no authoritatively. I live here and still get that a lot but here is a tip, say "no tengo dinero" (I have no money) and just keep walking, they will not follow you since there are soooo many people for them to hit up here in Madrid, they usually just move on to the next person. You can also use the "jame en paz! (Leave me alone) phrase if they insist and bother you. Personally I am a bit of a pushover and although I never give out money, I usually give food or drink to the more unfortunate here who are living in the streets. I think that if you give them money, they will tend to spend it on alcohol or cigarettes.
take care,
jer...

We just visited Madrid for the first time a week ago. A "pregnant" lady came by the ourdoor cafe in the Plaza Mayor and tried to solicit money from the 12 students (middle schoolers) in our group. She ultimately moved on, mumbling something unknown, replete with backwards nasty glances. She scored at the next table. One of the kids noticed that "baby" got moved a few times as "momma" shifted positions, and baby in fact was a pillow.

Panhandling does not bother me, so long as it is not threatening. I just got back from a trip along the Pacific coast and it seemed as though the ranks of beggars has expanded. The most vocal and insistent were the women in 'better' parts of town (downtown Pasadena, California was particularly bad!). I guess the better it pays the more there are!
