"the man!"

Hi Mad-Sue, jer here. Thanks for reporting back after yuor trip. As for the beggars, this is the norm in Madrid as of many years ago, violent crime against visitors is almost non-existant and Madrid is still one of the most amiable cities in all of Europe. The homeless and beggars and such are going to ask for a handout as in any city or country inthe world but they usually do not push it if you say no authoritatively. I live here and still get that a lot but here is a tip, say "no tengo dinero" (I have no money) and just keep walking, they will not follow you since there are soooo many people for them to hit up here in Madrid, they usually just move on to the next person. You can also use the "jame en paz! (Leave me alone) phrase if they insist and bother you. Personally I am a bit of a pushover and although I never give out money, I usually give food or drink to the more unfortunate here who are living in the streets. I think that if you give them money, they will tend to spend it on alcohol or cigarettes. take care, jer...
