Recently I've read quite a few stories posted on backpacker websites regarding people being violently mugged in Barcelona. The majority of these stories involve people being attacked in broad daylight on or near busy streets. I also read a US travel advisory stating that many of these attacks are directed towards asian tourists. Although my two asian friends and I are still going to go to Barcelona no matter what this summer, I'm starting to feel a little paranoid. What can I do to make sure this doesn't happen to us?

Read this site about the STREET SCAMS OF BARCELONA. Some of this also applies to Madrid.
http://www.jones.tc/barna/scams.html

This is essential reading for anyone considering going to Spain.

My sister was walking in Barcelona, when a crowd of Peruvian children threw chocolate chip cookies,as if to be excrement,on her, then mobbed around her to clean it off ,they were trying steal her wallet..Ive seen that on TV, in SA,street kids called piranhas swarm victims, ripping off cloths with razor blades, stealing anything they can in a few seconds

This stuff is a worldwide phenomenon and all big cities run the risk of scams/muggings/etc... but if you use common sense you will be fine.

Barcelona is a great city to visit but there are bad neighborhoods and yes, you can even get mugged in broad daylight if you are in an isolated area.

As for the children that swarm their victims, it is by no means limited to Peruvians. I have seen this happen in Granada on one of the streets that leads up to the Alhambra. A Brit lost his camera (which was around his neck) to a little one with a tiny pocket knife that just cut the strap and ran with it while the other tikes felt him up for the wallet and the cash prize. The children (4 or 5 of them) were "Gitanos" (Gypsies).

There are a million scams and tricks and the site mentioned by Redwood above should help.

Saludos,
jer...

Thanks for adding to this, Jer. Everyone should exercise caution and common sense. People need to sit back and observe their surroundings and not have the attitude of IT CAN'T HAPPEN TO ME. Con artists and pickpockets have been doing this for years. IT IS A PROFESSION for them. Remember that.

Be vigilant and alert at all times.
