Je je je. I don't mean to sound harsh, but it's just one of those topics that sets off something in me. You wouldn't believe the number of times I've had to convince people that Madrid really is a relatively safe city if you take the proper precautions. Anne

During my first few trips to Madrid I managed to attract the bad element, something I'm capable of doing most anywhere, however. My gypsy friends tried to ask me directions, sell me roses, and even dropped change in the street in front of me.They failed to realize that my generally rude nature would be of no use to anyone seeking directions, trying to sell me anything regardless of charitable purpose, or requesting assistance in picking anything up. I was coached on some local phrases to use when being approached (modesty keeps me from repeating them here), and although I can only guess what they actually mean, they are truly impressive when shouted for practice at the top of your lungs, in a narrow street, at 04:00. I think one of them means "Run Away, Run Away", but I could be confusing that with something from Monty Python. Thyglow

Anne, I could not have written it better myself  It is a well known practice that people focus on the negative when they reflect back on their journeys, it is what stands out most and this is unfortunate Unless asked to, people do not normally go onto message boards and write out of the blue..."I was in ... for 1 week and never got robbed" but they will go to the boards and tell the horror story of how they got their bag stolen the first day they were someplace. quote: I get really frustrated when people say how Madrid is dangerous and they'd never go there or go back again for fear of their life.
As do I, as do I It is important to note here that the majority of these people are from suburbs (and never venture into cities) and small towns where one knows just about everyone else (exageration but you all get the point). Saludos, jer... p.d. thyglow my man, you just look like the perfect victim!!!

Chica, from Philly? NJ'er here Anyway, on the topic, I've never had anything to account for yet... but visually I can pass as a local. I have a finnish friend who's been here as long as me, and she's been pickpocketed twice, once the wallet, and another time the cell phone. She says, at both times she was talkin finnish with some friends in the subway, the pickpocketers thought she was a tourist. Cfk.
