Hi sedusa, good ot have ya aboard.

A few other members have posted about being Jewish in Spain before and the threads did not generate much interest Frowner

Here is a related thread...

Racism in Spain???? (the Jewish theme starts about half way down the thread with "lulu81").

My mom was bornin Tel Aviv and lived there until she was 10 but I was not brought up religious AT ALL so I have not really been in touch with the "Jewish Madrid".

I do have a friend/business aquantance named Alex who is a Spanish Jew, fluent in Spanish, English, Itialian, Hebrew and a few more languages and if you like I can get some info from him on this subject, he is a really nice guy and is always looking to help out people who want to know about this.

Hi Jer,
Matzoh ball soup does sound good right about now. As for you Jewish friend, I would love if you could ask him to help me! I am not expecting a lot as this counrty is very Catholic based, but anything can help. I am also not very religious, so alll things Orthodox do not interest me. Thanks,
Sedusa

I'm a Jew,
A lonely Jew
I can't be merry
'Cause I'm Hebrew
On Christmas.

Hey little boy I couldn't help but hear
Your feeling left out of Christmas cheer
And I've come to say that you shouldn't be sad
This is the one month you should be glad

`Cause its nice to be a Jew on Christmas.
You don't have to deal with the season at all.
You don't have to be on your best behavior or give to charity.
You don't have to have to go to grandma's house with your alcoholic family.

Its a good time to be Hebrew,
On Christmas...

btw, a jewish friend of mine sent me that song (previous post)

one of the great things about non-christian religions, like the eastern ,asian ,jewish restaurants in NYC, Toronto ...is, they have exotic food you can enjoy when every other eatery is closed for the holidays .

In college, my non-Christian friends (Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist) loved Christmas because working that day would earn them double or triple time...a great way to help take a dent out of the next semester's tuition bill! :jeje: :jeje:

Hi there,

How was your "Christmas season"? I know that there are two synagoges in Madrid; I think that one is Conservative and one Orthedox. They are listed in the English ex-pat press (The Broadsheet, In-Madrid, etc.). If you are still in Madrid, visiting these should lead you to meet lots of nice Jewish people. There seem to be several American executives here who are Jewish...one is a friend of mine and one is an ex-boss.

Also, I've read that there is even a jewish school in Madrid that may begin to be subsidised by the Government soon which would make it quite reasonable!

Good luck! Smiler

Hi all,

Have been reading this thread and the one Jer referred to in this thread. Good to know about the vegetarian restaraunts...
Can anyone tell me where the main synagogue in Madrid is? I will be arriving in Madrid at the beginning of October, and a few days after that is Yom Kippur (day of atonement), which as y'all (might) know, is one of the biggies of the Jewish calendar. And if anybody out there has had any contact with the local Jewish community, I would appreciate the info.

thanks
had to say this again: GREAT site! GREAT board Smiler !

(job satisfaction - there's nothing like it, right Jer?)
