Hey mm-land--
I'm looking for a run-of-the-mill general practitioner who can do a yearly check-up. Has anyone found anyone good? I use Sanitas, but I might be willing to pay for a doctor off the plan. He/she doesn't need to speak English. Any ideas?

me too! this has been one of the hardest things for me to track down. i've gone to sanita's millenium clinic a few times, but the docs are always different and lately the clinic is very crowded.
we need an longtime mm-er who has been here a long time to give us their recs. (though i prefer a sanitas doc).

I keep going through the Sanitas clinics and the (somewhat creepy) gabinetes in my immediate vicinity. If the problem is in need of immediate attention, I've just gone to the Sanitas urgencias over in Arguelles (Parque Nuevo or something like that), since you can see a doctor and get tests done right away (well, just once when I had bronchitis and I couldn't take it anymore. And Christian went to the same urgencias when the barrio doctor told him to use saline solution on his raging Thanksgiving 2005 ear infection--no wait whatsoever over there).

Since I'm more crisis-oriented, I've found some good specialists, but still haven't found a good GP (the barrio doctors all seem to be octogenarians who think that a little saline solution cures pretty much anything if you are under 60). Also, does anyone know of a lab that doesn't take forever to get an appointment and get the results back? We usually go to the place on Gran Via and it seems like everything takes at least two weeks.

Thanks Nava--it is good to be back! If I can't find anything good under Sanitas, I may give them a try.

I'm looking into a place called Clínica DAM that is covered under Sanitas. Of course no one is answering in the afternoons (an August thing, I'm sure) and I'm too jet-lagged to get up in the morning...

I'm still open to other suggestions.... Seriously, none of you mm-ers are getting yearly check-ups? ¡Que vergüenza!

It's not the norm for me as a Brit, mariposita, to have a yearly checkup blush Maybe it's just a US thing? I mentioned it to my ex, who works for an american company and he said he hasn't had a check up since 1986 eeker and we have insurance, so it wouldn't be a problem!!!!

So, it makes me wonder, is it that those citizens of countries with a national health system just don't bother with checkups?

I'd guess that most Americans don't do them either. I haven't had one in a couple of years. I usually got one when I switched insurance companies or primary care physicians. It's one of those things that you are supposed to do--but don't...

Hey Megan, let me add my "welcome back" to everyone's. I saw your post right away but wasn't sure if I wanted to recommend my Sanitas guy. He's an OB/GYN not a GP, and he's ok I guess...but I'm not sure I'm all that happy with him. Hard to tell at this point, so I didn't want to send you there. He's on vacation anyway. The problem isn't really him, but his nurse, who laughed at me when I called about a certain problem...

Oh and the lab test results wait is just ridiculous. I ended up going to an urgent clinic in the states and getting my results in 5 (five) minutes. For a price, of course.
