Hey, I totally agree with you, I think will always feel safe in Madrid. The "in the streets" comment reminds me of one of my favorite things in Madrid and Spain as a whole. It is called "el paseo" ("the stroll") and is the simple but quaint practice of going for an afternoon walk in the streets of the city or village you live in. There is a great classical Spanish/French co-production that EVERYONE should see called "Calle Mayor" by Juan Antonio Bardm (of the famous Bardem family and uncle to Javier) made in 1956. * www.humanities.uci.edu/spanishandportuguese/conf2001/tales.htm#calle (in English). * www.racodepedralbes.com/art/ver.php?art=2069 (in Spanish). * www.jesuscastanon.com/pages/pagina18.htm (in Spanish). A movie about the heart of the Franco years but you can see what the "paseo" was and continues to be today (only a bit more free these days). Saludos, jer...

Oh, do I remember the "paseo"! I think if I'd stuck with that great custom, I might have stayed a more fit person, too. Of course, where I come from, plazas to walk around are few and far between. And men don't compliment spinsters on the street with flowery "piropos" as they did back then...at least when accompanying a passel of American teen-aged girls. Neat to see that UCI website, with Antonio Banderas prior to being a star here. Have you seen "Jamn, Jamn"---seems to me that maybe Penelope Cruz was in it. Correct me if I'm wrong on that.

I feel safe in Madrid and am looking forward to going back this summer. I always keep my guard up and am vigilant about my surroundings, especially in crowded places. I think that the people who make up these reports only focus on small, petty crimes such a pickpocketing. Hey, I live in Richmond, VA (the supposed murder capital) but we are a small town with like 200,000. It's no wonder. I just tell people to use their best judgement. If you wouldn't walk into a strange situation in your hometown, why would you do it somewhere else? Shawn
