Anyone knows what the best way is to deal with cockroaches? My girfriend has seen cockroaches in the bathroom (?) I havent seen any yet, but we just moved in so that might still happen. And when that moment comes I want to be ready.

I heard that the best thing is something that kills them but does not repel because if they start moving it gets harder to get rid of them.

Anybody got any experience with this? I havent seen a cockroach in my life, only in David Cronenberg films.

There is a "non violent" cockroach catcher on the market!! Bit like the ratcatcher stuff - it is a little "house" and inside is a nice sticky carpet for the cockroaches to walk on, they then get trapped and you change the carpet when the house is full!!!!!

I say, just stamp on the buggers!!!!!

I would say if you have already got an infestation in the place, you have got a real problem, and should not mess about trying to deal with it yourself, but get some professional help in, or you will deffinately make it worse, and I speak from experience.

There is never just the odd one or two, or even just a few, if you have seen one, then you can be sure that they are already breeding, and hidden in something somewhere, and probably have already multiplied by the dozens.

I do not exagerate about this, I have seen it with my own eyes, in a friends place, when he pulled away from the wall a nailed on panel, it was seething with hundreds of them, and he ended up having to have the house demolished, because they said it would not be possible to get rid of them by any other means, that would cost thousands, and take many weeks to be sure that the place was cleaned of them.

So take my advice and get it looked at by a qualified person, don't try to do it yourself and risk making an even bigger problem and spreading them to other properties.

I'm not joking, it can get really serious if you are not careful, you could be putting down "sticky carpets" for the next ten years, and it will not get rid of them, at least not permanently.

Oh, and I just heard that stamping on them is very bad as that is rumoured to spread their eggs and other cockroaches are attracted to their own dead.

So if anyone else has them.... seems like a good enough reason not to do that.

Hilko, cockroaches are part and parcel of life on this island!!!! There is a school of thought that says just leave them be. I must admit that they do become a nuisance in the bar kitchens here, after the bugsprayers have been in. Makes the little buggers run all over the place and they get in everything!!! Just cos you cant see them doesnt mean they are not there!!!

And stamping on them may very well draw the others to them, but I didnt mean just stamp on them and leave them in situ!!!! Eeker Chuck em in the bin!!! Big Grin

Gosh, Iberian...That's kind of a 'The house is HALF infested with cockroaches' kind of pessimistic approach, isn't it! Wink Red Face You've obviously never seen that movie: Joe's Apartment. :jeje:

Must have had a bug Big Grin in my system this p.m. as Iberians post wasnt there when I answered above!

Nigel, here in the Canaries when you get the bugsprayers in, they guarantee their work, so it shouldnt cost thousands to try and get rid of the cockroaches, they just keep coming back and spraying again......and again and....... We just have to live with the smell Eeker And the cockroaches spread to other houses all by themselves, I just hate it when they fly out of the cupboards at me!!!!

And another thought!!! Spraying does upset them a bit and can convince them to try going and living next door to escape the poison, so maybe this is a case of not calling in the experts!!!

Havent I read somewhere that cockroaches are the only things that will survive a nuclear holocaust? If that is true, just get a can of spray and spray across the threshold of each room. They will die as they cross it and you can just sweep them away and save yourself a wodge of dosh!!!!!

The oriental variety are HUGE. And they come out in the dark which is why you can't see them normally. I saw one in our bathroom in Cadiz province. Was asked by a friennd "Do you put your bath/basin plugs in at night?" Hadn't thought about that but I guess they can come up through the plug hole. Since doing that - NO ROACH. But frankly they can live anywhere. As for he ended up having to have the house demolished, because they said it would not be possible to get rid of them by any other means
I would frankly avoid having the property demolished especially if you are renting. :jeje:

I used to live in Texas, where everything is bigger...including roaches. Eeugh.
They hang out where there is water and damp. I recall the safest, cleanest way to repel them was a sprinkling of borax -- the kind you put in the laundry to soften the water.
Chemical poisons can hurt your pets and plants, but the borax is harmless and cheap, and doesn't stink up the place.
