Hi all,
I haven't posted in a while, not since moving to Amsterdam I think. Anyway I'll get to the point. My friend and former roomie from when I was in Madrid (she's Dutch living in Amsterdam now) is wanting to move back to Madrid next year and want's me to join her. No surprise I'm desperate to go, the main reason I took this job in Amsterdam was to save a bit more money, that and to have the opportunity to live in the Netherlands for a year. I'm now starting to wonder if Spain will start to do what the US did after 9/11 which is crack down on illegals. I know up till now Spain has taken a relatively laid back view of illegal Americans as we don't tend to deplete the countries financial resourses. Do you think that will change after 3/11? Will they start to more strictly discourage people living illegally in Spain? I still have till Dec. to worry about this. Worse case scenario I guess I could go for the three months only, but am scrimping and saving to be able to financially live in Madrid as long as possible. I've even registered for a TESL course for this July in Madrid so that I will be more easily employable (illegal, but employable). I'm interested in any thoughts on this matter.
Hugs,
Nanny

Im not sure what is going to happen as far as a 'crackdown' but as an owner of a restaurant soon opening in Madrid it is almost impossible for me to hire someone without permission to work. Seems like there are frequent work inpections, at least in restaurant activities. I know several restauranteurs in Madrid and none of us feel as though we can risk it.

As far as nanny work or anyother sector Im not so sure.

Dosa Grill! Wow, sounds great. I am a former FOH consultant/FOH manager from Detroit originally and constantly fiend for us-style customer service/rest. culture. So I am thrilled you are bringing a little of that to Madrid!
I can't work here either so I'm not hitting you up for a job, but I am interested in your opening events. Would love to attend/help out whatever. I am also a formerly paid/currently hobbied event planner and I know tons of expats/journalists/locals etc. (I think I am having a slash/backslash day!)
Anyway, keep us/me in particular (!) posted.
Cheers and welcome,
Candela

Well, Zapatero said he want to combat illegal working but it's because it's easier to abuse of illegal workers not for security reasons, or maybe yes because they're used by mafias to sell products ilegally or whatever, but it looks there won't be an antiterrorist action in that way.
In fact I think the terrorist of 11-M were legal residents in Spain.

I second Candela's sentiments re the opening info, except that I can work here legally and I am hitting you up for a job Big Grin

Will be back in Madrid end of April, have to regularly blow into a brown paper bag to calm myself down over the prospect...

Good luck!

Good luck LA Guy in the opening of your restaurant! Here in Lanzarote, everyone who works in a restaurant has to go on a health and safety course (therefore has to be legal) with such wonderful multi answer questions, such as "should you have a cat in your kitchen" answer (a) yes, to catch the mice, (b) yes, to have as a pet and (c) no!!!!!!. Is it the same in the mainland?

Also, Candy, what is FOH? Please explain for us Brits out here!!!

hey madsue, not to fear, it is not your britishness that is getting in the way of your not understanding what "FOH" is.

it must be a restaurantuer term but i am pretty sure only candeeeeeellllaaaa, maybe L.A. Guy and possibly a few others in the industry know what it means...

i did a search and it is one of the following...

"Front Of House": engineering term, specialized in Front Of House designing.
www.fohonline.com :jeje:

"Fires Of Heaven": video game (lord of the ring-ish) maybe Candela is a descendant of "Lord Leonus Crowly...

www.fohguild.org

Eeker :jeje:

"FOH Lyd og Lys p nettet": ni puta idea :jeje: but it looks like it is related to haunted houses.
www.foh.dk

"Friends of Horticulture": self explanatory Big Grin
www.wellesley.edu/FOH/home.html

"Federal Occupational Health": assists Federal agencies in improving the health, safety and productivity of the Federal workforce.
www.foh.dhhs.gov

i could go on all day, check it out HERE

for the record, "Federal Occupational Health" is my guess on what Candy meant by "FOH consultant/FOH manager in her post, although i can't really imagine Candela in one of those asbestos suits while working at a restaurant Wink

saludos,
jer...

p.d. and YES, i do have a lot of free time today but you asked Red Face

The veggie wasn't thinkin' o' grillin', but I thought there might be other aspects of promoting a new venture. And you sort of got it right with FOH - it is 'front of house' in this instance - maitre d's etc. I know the concept of refined dining will be foreign to weiner-boy... :jeje: :jeje:

FOH--Front of the House in the US refers to the waitstaff, hosts, maitre d', managers, and non-kitchen staff--in other words, the folks who actually deal with customers.

Mufino, i was referring to the idea of your having anything to with grilled meat at all Eeker

thanks for clarifying but i understood after the first post, the repeated one was overkill Red Face

well mariposita, i was a waiter for over 7 years back in ny and we just called ourselves... well... "wait staff" :jeje:

i do recall some using "front of house", i think the term was invented to make those jobs look more like carreers.

and of course they had to shorten it to "FOH".

somehow "FOH consultant" sound much more professional.

jer...

Hmm. A "dosa grill.."
Most of the dosas I've had were veggie Udipi things. Maybe it's the sizzling FOH staff that gives it that protein zest?
("Fly, what's this waiter doing in my soup?")

Provide the address, I'll be sure to pop in for lunch!
