I'm planning my first trip to Spain and I'd like some advice on car rental. Here's my current plan...

Fly into Barcelona, stay in Barcelona 4 nights (no car)

Take night train into Granada, rent car in Granada. Stay in Granada 3 nights

Drive to Ronda, stay in Ronda 3 nights

Drive to Seville, stay in Seville 2 nights... But I'm afraid of driving in Seville, so I was thinking of driving to airport or trainstation to return the rental car, then taxi into Seville... I'm then flying out of Seville...

Does this seem like a reasonable plan? And if so, who should I contact for car rental? Ideally a company that I can pick up the car around the Granada train station and drop off just outside of Seville...

Any advice would be great...Thanks!

I think that I would rent it in Barcelona and drop it in Seville when you arrive there. You could make some nice stops on the way from BCN to Granada (like the aqueduct at Tarragona and maybe do a little small-road detour to some small interior towns). It might even be cheaper to rent the extra day and stay the night somewhere in between.

It seemed like parking wasn't all that tight (at least by Madrid standards)when I was in Granada. We stayed in the Albaicín and it was tricky figuring out how to get in (there's basically one entrance to the neighborhood and you need to get a code to get the barrier to let you in), but it's a pretty small town all in all. And it would be great to have a car to drive up in the mountains, check out Lorca's village... stuff like that.

I love driving in Spain, as long as it isn't in a big city. Maybe you could rent at the Barcelona airport and head south from there, avoiding the city. Check out easycar.com. I've found some good deals that way, though I've never dropped off in a different place from where I picked up.

Hmmm... About how long is the drive from Barcelona to Granada? Don't mind the adventure, but also don't necesarilly want to spend too much time driving... And never been on a train, let alone a night train...

I'll look into easycar ... thanks for the advice...

hey.

my 2 eurocents.

with 3 nights (2 days?) in granada i would not rent a car at all. you will have plenty to do andd see in granada for 2 days and if you rent a car, you will only have to worry about where to leave it (or pay a small fortune for a parking garage).

that much time in ronda is a lot of time so you should rent the car when you leave granada and then return it in sevilla as you were planning to do.

the above plan will allow you to explore around ronda and to sevilla and only have to rent a car for 3 days.

there is no reason to have a car in granada, especially if you only have a few days there.

jer...

hey...the major car rental companies are well-represented in spain...ie. www.hertz.es and www.avis.es (or you could just go to their american .com sites)
another very popular rental agency here, which is related to national car is www.europcar.es
you should have no prob finding the 902 numbers (similar to 800 in the states, but with a small fee) and then all of them will have english-speaking operators. however, you should be able to plan all this before you arrive.

also, be sure and bring your current drivers' license, a major credit card with min 300 balance for security and...duh...your passport. AAA in the states sells an "international license" for 10 bucks, but i've never heard of it being necessary....though i'd be interested in the opinions of others who rent....
do tell mm'ers.

happy trails,
candy

I would also check out pepe cars. We rented one of their cars when we took a driving holiday and it was really cheap, something like 23 euros a day. I don't know what their policy is regarding renting in one city and returning in another though.

The train from Barcelona is slow, slow--12 hours, I think. But I checked and driving takes a long time, too (9 hours more with stops).

Did you think of taking the plane from Barcelona to Granada? It takes an hour and 20 minutes and will probably cost about the same as the train. Vueling has flights:

And, jer is right. If you are going to be in Granada for two or three days, you probably won't really want to leave town. Don't forget to reserve tickets to the Alhambra ahead of time. You can do it on the web:

Thank you so much for everyone's advice... Since it sounds like 3 days is a lot for Ronda, I'm wondering if it would make more sense to have 2 nights in Ronda and 3 nights in Seville... I know there's more to do and see in Seville, but I was also thinking it would be nice to relax in Ronda and have less to do... Hmmm... I also wanted to do at least one day trip to Jerez de la Frontera since my wife does dressage and loves andalusian horses. Is Jerez de la Frontera on the way to Seville? Hmmm, decisions decisions...

I like the idea now of not renting a car until I leave Granada... Saves a little bit of money and less time worrying about parking...

Regarding the train, I was planning on doing the night train so the time wouldn't be too bad and it would save me one night in a hotel. Although flying does sound nice... I have this romantic idea of a night train but I have a feeling it won't be as exciting as I imagine... Thanks so much for everyones advice...

This is only slightly off topic, but in regards to the night train, the only time I took one I had a hard time sleeping as I ended up feeling motion sick. Sitting up was not a problem, it was lying down. Would have been easier if I'd been on the bottom bunk (I could have gotten up and walked around a bit before trying to sleep again), but I was sharing the car with two little old ladies so that wasn't an option. In the end I got up and just didn't go back to bed. Better to be tired than nausious. If you also suffer from motion sickness, pack dramamine. wink

Cheers,
Bonnie

I think that Jerez, Ronda and Seville form a triangle. If your wife is into dressage, then you should definitely go to Jerez. Maybe you could spend the night or spend the day and head to Seville later.

You can take a tour of the Real Escuela Andaluza del Arte Ecuestre (the riding school). And I think they do performances (my honorary aunt is a dressage freak, so I researched all of this a while back...going on memory). Here's their site:

And, I'm not sure why, but as I remember Jerez seems to be full of some of the nicest people in all of Spain. Seriously, buena gente. Maybe it's all that sherry--it does tend to mellow you out...

Thanks for everyones advice... Now I'm looking into rental car rates and I was thinking of picking up my car at the Granada train station (a the end of my stay in Granada) and dropping off at the Seville train station before I enter Seville's city center.

Are these good places for pick up/drop off, or would you suggest dropping off at airports? Where are easier to deal with and/or closer to the city centers?

I have used CROWN for car rentals in Andalucia and always been happy. www.crowncarhire.com
Check out the rates?
I think that it would be best for you to drop off the car at their office near Santa Justa rail station in Seville. It's no difficulty driving in Seville except for the old central city which has narrow one way streets. CROWn is a pretty relaxed company and I think their rates are as good as any.
Alternative is of course to ditch renting a car altogether.
From Granada you can take a train to Ronda. Takes about 2 1/2 hours and makes for a relaxed journey. Look at times on RENFE?
Cost is 17 Euros.
And from Ronda to Jerez is a bus journey. Bus company www.tgcomes.es
Or you can bus directly to Seville.
Stay longer in Seville but Jerez is well worth a visit. You can train easily from Jerez into Seville.

I was in Seville for just one day earlier this week. This was my first visit to Seville, and I was surprised by how quiet the roads were in the city, but then again July is holiday season, so perhaps usually there is more traffic?

I took a bus from the airport to the city, and got off some place after Santa Justa station. The city is only a short bus ride from the airport, but the wait for the bus in the morning was about an hour, although seemed to be more frequent on the return in the evening.

I think Vueling.com flights from Barcelona go to Seville, so perhaps it would make sense for you to fly Barcelona/Seville first, if you decide not to take the train.

I loved Seville, 1 day was nowhere near long enough there, so shall return, perhaps when the weather cools down.

Have fun.

hey sooz.

yes, you are right, in july and august the only people nutz enough (due to the heat) nutz to go to sevilla are...

1) tourists.
2) foreign students for summer programs.

... and the vast majority of these people tend not to have cars so there are a LOT less vehicles on the streets.

also, the MASSIVE construction going on in the city center has a lot of roads inacccesible to cars so maybe that would explain the lack of traffic.

Two belated comments:

--rental car rates may be less expensive for Americans to reserve by internet from the states (or through a US site) than directly from a European company or site.

--I used National to reserve from the US but actually picked up the car through a Spanish affiliate. The total rate was less than European sites that I found.

--there may be a surcharge or added tax to pick the car from an airport than from a train station or location. I seem to recall that the charge was 25 or 30 Euros more to pick up car at Barajas than at Atocha train station.

cheers
