Okay, how about this one... (I've done a search, but I don't think this situation has come up before.) A friend of mine from the US is coming to visit soon, and he wants to rent a car in Madrid or Barcelona, and drop it off in Milan. Anyone had any experience with an 'international one way' rental before? I realize there will be a significant surcharge, but I'm hoping I can find him a better deal than he has found so far... currently his surcharge is looking like being two to three times the total cost of the rental!! Cheers, Steve

Uff, I just went through that in the States...it was SO expensive cuz they have to return the car themselves. I can't imagine how much more difficult that must be across country lines. I think working out something personal, via a friend or maybe even an ad in something like Craig's List (rideshare?) would be your best bet for saving money.

one could probably buy a car and sell it when they leave for less, depending on the duration of the stay however and of course on the "legality" of them driving where they are going to be. Jules... quote: it was SO expensive cuz they have to return the car themselves.
they probably just tell you that but truth is that they most likely have another customer who wants to rent the car for the opposite trip you did (or a trip that gets the car close to it's original location) and hence they slam that renter with the extra fees as well, making a killing on both of you for example, you rent in dc and drop off in charlotte south carolina and then they have another customer that wants to rent from charlotte (or close by) and drop off in dc (or close by). works out perfect for the car rental companies. saludos, jer...

I think that's actually a good option for someone who is renting for more than two weeks--lleasing it and then "selling" it back--especially if you want full insurance coverage. Steve--if your friend is going to need the car for more than two weeks, tell him to look into leasing one. Here's an article on it: http://www.reidsguides.com/t_au/t_au_leases.html

Thanks Juliette and Meghan, That lease or 'buy back' deal that Renault and Peugeot offer... while at first I was sceptical, it really does seem to be an awesome way to see some of Europe, ESPECIALLY if you need to drop the car back in a different country. My friend says that he has also compared the lease arrangement, and found it doesn't compete with some rental deals. He must be finding better rental deals than I found, cause the only rental car company that would allow me to return a Spanish car in Italy is AutoEurope... "Dear Mr. Savage, Thank you for contacting us with this inquiry. Our suppliers do allow this sort of one way travel, though there are some restrictions on types of vehicles. For a standard midsized sedan, you can expect an additional charge for this one of approximately $1454 USD + VAT to $2000.00 USD + VAT. Please feel free to contact us at any time if you have any questions or comments." . . . . . I can't think of any additional questions, can you??? Cheers, Steve

Hmm, maybe: Can I come to where you are and shove that quote up your...? That's highway robbery--literally! If your friend (or anyone else) does to the lease thing, report back. I've always been curious about it. I would love to do a big crazy long road trip around Europe one summer and it sounds like a good way to go, especially if you can start in one of the cheaper countries, like France.
