We are looking for a fast and economical way to get to La Corua from Madrid. We will probably rent a car (or go by plane). Any ideas on how long a drive it REALISTICALLY is? Also, any good stopping places that we should try to get to on our way...that won't take us out of our way? thanks. Smiler

Hey marcela, while flying to La Corua from Madrid is fast (1hr 10 min.), economical benefits compared to the car rental will depend upon how many of you are travelling.

I checked www.iberia.com and got a whopping 250 one way per ticket in April Eeker

Was also looking at www.spanair.com since they supposedly have 30 each way flight specials now. Unfortunatley, they do not seem to fly to La Corua and the closest they can get you is Vigo.

I would go with the car rental.

Check out www.guiacampsa.es for routes and times. They are usually pretty acurate with their TRIP PLANNER.

If you have not been, you will want to stop in Santiago de Compostels of course Cool

You can even set the TRIP PLANNER to calcualte a route through Santiago de Compostela.

Saludos,

THANKS so much for that wonderful site for trip planning! Here in the states there are many such sites, but I didn't even think of there being one in Spain. I loved it! Also, I will continue to look for cheap flights. That would definitely tbe the fastest way to get to Galicia. Smiler

Hi Marcela --

Not sure if you have checked out the sites previously mentioned, but if you decide to go by car, the route is pretty direct. There is a highway called the A-6 which goes directly from Madrid to A Corua. The distance is 592 Km and will take you about 5 hours drive time driving "normally" (between 100-140 kmph...be aware that the speed limit is 120 kmph).

If you check out Visual Map you will find an online map as well as route calculator.

As an FYI to help you determine the most cost effective manner, there are several tolls along this route (Madrid to San Rafael, approx 60 Km NW of Madrid the toll is 2.75€Wink and fuel prices are in the following ballpark: gasoline 83 centimos/liter and diesel is 72 centimos/liter. Right now the Euro is valued higher than the dollar making this a tad more expensive for you...depending on when you take your trip.

Have a good trip!
