Hi herbf, Your best bet is a flight to Oviedo. I have a page on internal flights: Cheap Domestic Flights in Spain(Easyjet is probably your best bet) Alternatively, there's the train: www.renfe.esor a bus www.movelia.esbut neither of these will take you directly from the airport. You'll need a bus or metro into town and then your bus or train. Flying is your best option (it might even be cheaper than the train if you can do it far enough in advance). Gijon is quite far from Madrid, so again, flying is a good option.

Thanks so much for the information. My flight arrives at 9:00am. The flight to Oviedo departs Madrid airport 19:45. That is a ten hour lay over. I checked the train schedule and I can get a train at 14:00. The train seemed to be the best bet until I realized the plane and the train arrive about the same time in Oviedo. It looks like the best option would be the plane and save the seven hour train ride. I could take the metro to town have lunch and return to the airport. It looks as though I have a lot of research to do for this trip. Thanks again, you have me off to a good start.

10 hours in Madrid, losing probably two hours in picking up your bags and check in, plus giving yourself an hour each way to get to and from the airport (though it shouldn't take you that long) leaves you six hours in Madrid. Plenty of time to see the basics or to take in one of the main museums. But check out the other airlines on that page. I know easyJet do a cheap flight but there might be others that are cheap. Air Asturias do the route (but they only have one plane!) and Iberia too, though they will probably be expensive.

Cervantes, I checked SpainAir and things are starting to look good. SpainAir has a 14:45 flight and the round trip cost is 81 euros. I might be able to call my friend to let her know I will be coming to visit. Will she be surprised! Your help has been a great blessing.

Cervantes, things are working out just fine. I will stay 4 nights in Gijon and spend 4 nights in Madrid with my friend. Reading the posts it seems that Hotel Dulcinea is the place to stay at in Madrid. Any information you have to make my trip enoyable please post. Thanks again for the airline tip.

Thannks for the link. I have my ticket for MAD to OVD with Iberia airlines. Iberia has the most frequent flights with decent prices. It is a one hour flight compared to a seven hour train ride. Taking a taxi from OVD to Gijon would probably be the easiest but I would prefer to take public transportation as it is more interesting. Can I catch a bus at OVD airport to Gijon?

The "Oviedo" airport is actually called the "Aeropuerto de Asturias", due to the fact that it is 47km from Oviedo (it's 14k from Aviles and 40k from Gijón). There are Alsa busses to Oviedo, Aviles and Gijón from the airport that cost 5.60 euros each way. A taxi would really set you back. Looks like the busses leave on the hour: http://www.alsa.es/VentaParticulares/contenidoHorarios.jsp?aeropuertos=SBut you can check for your particular day to be sure.

Thanks.......I will bus it to Gijon and take a taxi the final leg to my hotel. By chance would you know if they have more than one stop in Gijon? This is my first trip to Spain. Sort of a spur of the moment thing. Is Oveido worth doing a day trip? I just read about the "cider" last night. This should be a very interesting trip.

I agree with Mariposita. I haven't actually got to the coast yet, but I've seen pictures (a friend of mine gave me some pictures to go on my site). Oviedo itself disapointed me a little. Yes, it has the churches, but the town itself isn't that impressive. Also, the cider thing there is a little forced, with "Cider Boulevard" actually up in lights! There is cider anywhere in the region, you don't need to go to Oviedo for that. Damian

I will have the time for a day trip. I have received some wonderful help on this board and things are looking good. I can take a train from Gijon to Oviedo. The train schedule will give me about 7 hours in Oviedo. I would just like to sightsee, have a great meal and see what the cideria is all about. If it were not for the help MM has given me I would be lost in Spain.
