Renting a car is good idea if you are going to be doing a lot of moving around. It can be pretty expensive unless you look for a good deal from the States. If you are booking WELL in advance you can get a good deal and a good car from: http://www.easycar.com/eng/default.asp?R= Beware in Portugal. They drive like really fast and love to tailgate.... But don't get nervous about just be aware.....

Take it easy on my Portuguse people! ,iv read they are almost as bad as italian drivers!
>>5/18/2002 US warns - Portuguese drivers pose special hazards The US State Department has this week published a substantially revised list of warnings to its citizens visiting Portugal. The warnings predominantly focus on road safety and crime. "Portuguese driving habits, high speeds and poorly marked roads pose special hazards", says the latest US consular information sheet. The report further states that due to these habits, their citizens may come across "treacherous driving conditions", such as "narrow cobblestone streets, blind curves, unprotected embankments, herds of cows in the countryside roads (Azores) and the high speeds of other drivers." Besides having to deal with driving in Portugal, US tourists are also cautioned against "petty crime against tourists, which is on the rise in continental Portugal".
