Just wondering, do any of you cycle regularly in Madrid, as in using it to go to work on and not just a Sunday in the park thing? I know it seems suicidal, but I really would like to get a bike here. Any experiences?

Yes, I ride sometimes in the city, not now in winter (too cold), but it is less dangerous that it seems.
Use always a helmet and, important reminder for the brits, go beside the right side of the road. Use the bus lane if possible and be careful!

Cool

hey scooter, i too have cycled in the city on my mountain bike (usually on the way to a park) and, while i do not recommend taking main roads like gran va, calle alcal, etc..., if you trace out a more mellow route to work and back, you should be ok.

read more on bikinig in madrid, do some SEARCHES on "bicycle madrid", "cycling madrid" and similar terms, you will get some good results.

saludos,
jer...

I can't believe there is a thread on this, but however late my reaction may be here it is: "YES I DO, I CYCLE EVERY DAY TO WORK AND BACK AND I HAVEN'T DIED YET".

I do about 15 kilometers a day and I also use main roads like Francisco silvela/Avenida america and Calle alcala.
As long as you cycle clear, know where you are going, go fast and sure you should be fine. Always keep in might that the drivers in front of you and aside you don't see you!

I make it to work twice as fast as my colleages, stay fit and see a lot more that my bored metro-riding colleagues.

I am cutting down traffic giving a good example.

I thought I was the only one. I see some guys using their flashy double suspension mountainbikes in the park and or on the sidewalk sometimes but that is not big city cycling. It can be dirty and dangerous, but man is it satisfying!
