hi try www.renfe.es for all the train info. the ave runs everyday, several times a day. i haven't heard of problems with booking, but i've never booked in summer. i think currently all cars are non-smoking, but of course, the cafeteria car is a light up zone. you can also book ave and other train tix through most travel agents. well at least those here in spain. i usually go to el corte ingles because it is next to my work and the service fee is only 2 euros. i DO NOT suggest buying the tix at the train station. there is usually a wicked long line...a couple of hours a most. not fun alone, much less with ten year old. i know you can order tix through the renfe site, but i've never tried it, nor do i trust it. has anyone out there in mm-landia done it? let us know. cheers, candela

I have bought tickets for the AVE at Barajas airport. There is a RENFE counter situated in the TERMINAL 1 arrivals outer hall where you find rental car desks etc and the www.aerocity.com booth. They can issue tickets on demand and both times I have been there was no queue. I was buying tickets for the AVE from Atocha to Seville.
