Oh, and I almost forgot. Hey Redwood! I dont know just how bad Richmonds public transport is, but I am around St.louis a lot, especially East St.louis. And I find it hard to believe at times ANYTHING can get much worse. lol (maybe thats why I was so impressed with Madrids)

Hey LJ, thanks for chiming in here with your opinion. Now this threads is getting very interesting. Ok, while I have travelled around a but, I do not really consider myself a "seasoned" traveller so I am curious to know if anyone has found a better public transportation system than that of Madrid (especially a Metro/Subway/Tube )??? I am VERY interested in honest, first hand & objective opoinions here since of the Metros I have experienced, Madrid takes the prize, HANDS DOWN!!! Let the ideas flow!!! Saludos, jer...

Hey, a quick aside: i just read through this post and was very disturbed by the thin ice's comments. thank you guys for your intelligent responses to this person's thinly supported arguments and disrespectful sweeping statements. i agree with you--jer, esp, Shawn, Joy--completely! now, to the point. I can't wait to try out Madrid metro. no taxis for me, it's metro all the way! I am not a seasoned traveller myself, but i LOVE well-developed public transport systems. i guess it's because i didn't grow up in car culture. I guess I am really used to the subway in NYC and don't find it too bad, but there are frequent construction, changes of routes, delays...I find Paris metro very similar to NYC, only dirtier. Moscow metro is very good (or used to be). some of the stations are quite grand and monumental. I've also used Montral metro a couple of times, which is very clean, well-lit and very easy to use. Madrid metro is next...

this topic has brought many beautiful memories of various travels (thank you).... the only one I can comment on is St Louis - it has only one line, but takes you directly from inside the airport all the way to East St. Louis - just where everyone wants to go but it's cool for a midwestern city, besides Chicago, to actually have a little metro, hopefully more cities will start/revive a more comprehensive public transport. next stop - the Madrid metro - I'm glad to know that people think it's pretty efficient! I'll check it out and add my comment! ciao! erica

Hi everybody. I have discovered this page a few days ago, and I have enjoyed a lot with its contents, as I am trying to improve my English (please, excuse my poor English) About the public transport in Madrid: I was born in Madrid, and I think it is much better now. The other big city I have been living (for a few months)is London. The public transport there is very punctual (English punctuality, we say here), but in Madrid is modern and is quite well planned. I think we can be pleased with our public transport system, without giving up its improvement.

Hey Youngblood 74, welcome to the group and thanks for your info on London. I have been to the English capital but only as a tourist, never lived there. I did use the "Tube" and busses however and also found the underground to be on time but a bit dingy and dark, not to mention EXPENSIVE, but then again, what isn't in London As for your English, seems fine to me written at least) Good luck with your stay up north, you must miss Madrid a LOT See ya round the board!!! Saludos, jer...

havent travelled that much either, but i'm convinced that dublin has the worst public transport system of any capital/major city i've ever been to. it's a major deterrent against going home! hm, maybe it's deliberate then!? harmless

Hello Erica. I dont mean to get away from the topic of Madrid, But since I saw your reply I couldnt help it. I have known people who have lived in st.louis for years and have never EVER heard of a metro there and then just a short while back I was walking around downtown near the Landing(which I am really fond of because its the only area I know of around where the setting reminds me a lot of downtown Madrid) in old st.louie when I saw what looked identical to the Metro entrances in Madrid and thought, there is no way a metro is here and I never heard of it. I was itching to go down and take a look but was pressed for time. And what it is hard to believe it runs from Lambert field into the city and I have never heard of it. It is amazing what you can pick up on your Madrid Forum, Jer. Thanks again Erica, LJ

Oh yeah, that $2 NYC ticket makes the 0.52 eurocent (based on a 10 trip MetroBus ticket) Madrid one look... errrr... well... CHEAP!!! BTW: Last I was in NYC and rode the subway, there was still no 10 trip discount ticket (to my recollection) as there is here, can anyone confirm? All they had available for short-term discount usage was the discount one day pass for unlimited use for the full day. Saludos, jer...

Jer, they do have 'discount' passes, I forgot how much they were.. you buy a card and have money put on it, you can buy one for a week...which works if you're visiting and don't want to buy the monthly pass... I don't know if it was so much a discounted fare or just that you could purchase passes for shorter periods for convenience and when the money was used on the card, you could recharge it and purchase for another week. Somebody still in NY help me out! The pass I got was the weekly subway card, I paid something like $17 for it. For something like 10 trips...

there are several equivalents (sort of) in NYC: $10 metrocard--you pay for 5 rides and get 6 $20 card -- pay for 10 rides and get 12 (and of course you can share these cards) but you are right, jer, the 10 ride deal is new. however, there have always been weekly and monthly cards that do save you some money. a monthly card saves me at least $10 a month. it's unlimited and can be used as many times on as many transfers as you wish. the catch is you can't share it with someone because after you swipe it, 15-20 min must pass before you can use it again.
