Victor´s grandfather´s pueblo is in Asturias so we´re thinking about going for the Thursday through Sunday.

I´m assuming it´s best to rent a car from Madrid, but if it´s recommendable to take a train to Oviedo or Gijon and rent one there, I´d like to hear it. Also, any recommendations for hostels or rural hotels would be welcome. We´ll be mostly in the center and slightly east.

Thanks for any and all advice!!

hey, i'm headed to asturias for semana santa, to a town near infiesto. we booked months ago and had quite a bit of trouble finding a place back then, so i wish you luck in finding something.

if you train to oviedo or gijon and then rent a car, you are just adding extra hassle to your trip. you'd be best off renting here and then driving up.

here are some webs that we found very useful...

www.asturiasturismo.com

Happy Trails!

Coco--
At this point, your best bet might be to use a travel agent to see if they can find anything available... it's really last minute and you are going on one of the biggest travel weekends of the year.

I've done it both ways--train and then rent the car in Oviedo and drive all the way from Madrid. It's a pretty easy drive from Madrid--about five hours to Oviedo--provided that the mountain pass isn't snowy and the traffic isn't bad leaving Madrid. You can do a pitstop in León if you have time. The train ride is also nice (especially the last part over/through the mountains). You should check the prices and availability for both options, since rental cars are also really booked up during this time and the prices are pretty high in Madrid (they tripled between the time when we were looking last month and a week or so ago). You might also check out the flights.

Good luck.

There's also always the bus. Alsa goes 9x a day to Gijon from Leon; you can get multiple buslines from Madrid to Leon, and the bus station restaurant there is famous for its Menus del Dia.
