For an international driver's license, you show up at AAA, give them your real license, they take a pict of you (if you don't bring your own, you need 2, standard passport photos) they fill out the IDL they give you both back. All you need for the IDL is your state drivers license. While in Spain, you're supposed to carry both together. Chances are they'll never ask you for the US one, but you never know and since you're supposed to have them both to present... better safe than sorry.

Hey, I was just home but time flew by and while I was able to renew my normal NY license (most important since it had expired on my B-day this past Jan. 31st), I did not have time to get to an AAA office to get my international one Yes, I am STILL driving here with my normal license after almost 7 years I did read on that AAA page that kike linked to... quote: If you prefer to secure your International Driving Permit through the mail, enclose your completed application form, two passport-size photos, a $10 permit fee and a photocopy of your driver's license and mail them to:
Automobile Club of New York Attn: Travel Department 1415 Kellum Place Garden City, NY 11530-1690
Does this mean I can get it sent to my mom's house via mail if I include a pre-paid return mailer? Does anyone have experience with this? I do not know when I will be home again and would love to get the IDL now. Saludos, jer...

Jer, YES! As long as your stateside DL is current, you can do that! (they won't sent it to a foreign address though- so good thinking for them to send it to your moms!)

I am really glad I saw this topic. And this is very important to me as when I hope to be returning to Madrid is August or Sept. for a while,I plan on renting a car through a link I found here in the forum. I did not know you need an international drivers license to legally drive there, I take it you do, correct? Also, is it probably mandatory in order to rent a car? Probably so. I was kind of wondering about this for a while now and none of my friends there knew. I thought maybe so many tourists go there that perhaps your native license might be acceptable for legal use. Is that entirely wrong? I havent been able to get any answers on this anywhere so far. Sooo, thanks a lot. LJ

LJ- Legally you need the Int'l drivers license. People who don't get it are usually too lazy to get it done. Yes, you can drive there without it, but if you get in an accident- you better have it! As far as renting the car... it depends. In the US I've had friends rent a car without the Int'l license (it was a spanish license) but that's unusual- because you're supposed to have it to rent also. Now, it may help that it was an older gentleman renting so they oked it... but you're supposed to have it to rent anywhere that is not native for your license. Just put it this way, your license in a foreign country is not legally recognized without the Int'l license to back it up. Its cheap, its easy to get. Why not get it?

Yes, I do. I've done precisely what you just proposed for the last 5 years consecutively with no problem. I know that there's only a 6 month limit and that it should stand up, but I've been very fortunate in that, when I've been stopped, I've never been called on it by the 'civvies.' poseso....
