So, I've read about the strict security measurements being taken at airports in the UK and know about the need to purchase round trip tickets as to avoid getting hassled by immigration.
However, for a US citizen (a black woman) who purchased a one way ticket to Spain and a one way ticket to Tangier Morocco (as opposed to the round trip ticket, to save money), what are the odds that this person will be severely interrogated and forced to purchase a return ticket or not let into the country?

(Btw, I dont look like a terrorist; I look like the recent college graduate that I am, so that should help me out, right??)

Thanks

Jer, Ive used the search tool before to find answers to my questions but this particular question seems to be harder to answer; I could not find an answer in the threads that you linked, or in any of the searches that I conducted myself.

hey Candice.

the problem with your question...

... is that there is no real answer and it is most likely that board members do not want to say "don't worry about it!" and then eat their words when you end up not being allowed into the country.

as far as actually being tossed out after overstaying one's 90 days, it is unlikely that this would happen to an american but having a one-way ticket is another story.

by the way, if you read that entire schengen thread you will get a lot out of it.

in the last post on the first page of that thread by "Rob in Madrid", you can see...

quote:
Just met a lady who moved to Spain with her son to begin a new life as a teacher. In flying over she bought a one way ticket was told without a visa they wouldn't let her fly. So she had to buy a round trip ticket (with refund for one way) and they allowed her to fly.

and on the second page at the bottom, "mariposita" wrote...

quote:
From what I understand, going back to the US won't make you legal... Once you first enter Spain, you are allowed to be here (and in any other Schengen country) for 90 days during the next six months. You can't restart the six months by leaving and coming back again. That said, if you enter Spain from the US with a round-trip ticket that has you going back to the US, they probably won't do anything about it.

she is right and it has been said many times on the forums.

leaving spain (the schengen zone) and going back in the way you plan to do to morocco is not a valid move to "reset" your 90 days unless you stay out of the schengen zone for 3 months and then come back in.

the law provides for a max. stay of 90 days within every 6 months (180 days) so while it can work, border jumping is not legit.

as for the black thang most spaniards relate black people here to africa and not the u.s.a. and the africans here are almost all illegals (there are exceptions of course) so it can be a disadvantage.

hope all of this helps.

Jer, you have a private message.

By the way, my plan was not to go to Morocco in an attempt to "reset" the 90 days. Ive read so many different threads on many different forums about how this is not possible. Things would be so much easier if it were possible, but I suppose it's for the best..

As for being black, I am hoping that my US passport, my very New York accent, and the fact that I look like a typical American 20-something year old protect me from any potential prejudices/acts of discrimination, but who knows. Only time will tell.

I was naive to the negative image that blacks have in Spain, but now it makes sense as to why I would always get strange/questioning looks from the elderly when I studied abroad in Burgos a few years ago..
