Well I ran into it once, on a different computer... but for the life of me I can't remember where it was. I am looking for the type of callejero that shows supermercados. I've been searching through a tons of them, callejero.paginasamarillas.es has lots of stuff: tiendas de ropas, zapaterias...woohoo...but no supermercados... cry Anyone knows where I could find that sort of info? I'm apartment hunting as we speak and would like to see if there are any supermarkets near the places I've been looking at... Thank you in advance.

i have no idea ola, but i am in love love love with http://www.qdq.com maybe they do it. or you could just name search for top markets: champion, lidl, dia, ahorro, alcampo, carrefour.

the first three are pretty much all over central madrid.

good luck

Thank you both for your help. I think I found what I was looking for at http://calleacalle.paginasamarillas.es/zonas_madrid.jsp
It shows specified location and allows you to view any sort of alimentacion in the hood. Now I can take my map, walk around and see if those shops nearby are any good...

hey Ola.

yes, the calleacalle is part of paginas amarillas. you can get there from the page you were initially on (http://callejero.paginasamarillas.es) by clicking on "callacalle" on the menu at top.

be sure to have a good look around the areas since the calleacalle is ok but lacking since it does not list all of the supermarkets.

for example, i did a search on the plaza de san miguel (in front of my apt.) and it did show the "dia" market but totally skipped "gama" which is a good one and about 4 stores down from "dia".

the site is far from impartial as they only list those who pay to be in paginas amarillas.

and it is not even trustworthy on that. i know there is a "dia" supermarket on calle magdalena but they do not list it on that site. so, odd they would list some of the "dia" markets and not others nutz

saludos,
jer...

There is a "LiDL" supermarket on calle Magdalena (Tirso de Molina) as well, great stuff in there, I quite like LiDL, I use one here in London every week. Just thought I'd mention it!

Dang, I WISH calleacalle was lacking in this area... since the supermercados in this neighborhood just blow. I walked around and encountered a few... but found them a bit depressing - to put it mildly. (BTW I'm looking around the area Ronda de segovia) I guess I will just need to find my ways around without the supermarkets.

Ola, could you be more specific about the supermarkets that "blow" in that area?

which ones are there?

maybe you are not used to the spanish haphazard way of displaying items at smaller, discount supermarkets.

Ahhh... don't mind my ramblings... smiler its not that the specific ones blow, just that there are hardly any of them around... The closest one is Gama. I'm sure i'll get used to it and will get things figured out soon - must be the rainy weather and annoying apartment searching thats getting to me these days.

Ola,

There is a Champion on the corner of Calle Toledo and Segovia-not sure if that is too far away for you-but they deliver (up my four flights of stairs, no less). big grin

hey Ola (& gang).

i highly recommend shopping at carrefour online --> http://www.alimentacion.carrefour.es .

ena and i use it once a month or so for the heavy stuff that does not need to be bougth on a weekly (or daily basis).

Wendy, you may want to consider it once you get an idea of brands and items since it is a bit cheaper than champion.

then you can just go to the mercado de la cebada every week or so for fruits & veggies, meats and other fresh items (champion is INSANELY expensive when it comes to fruits & veggies nutz) but it is always packed with foreigners (they don't know the mercado de la cebada is around the corner.

mariposita and christian can attest.

back to carrefour online. just gfo and register with their website (http://www.alimentacion.carrefour.es), shop online and they will deliver.

also great for those of us like me and Wendy who live in 4th floor walkups.

saludos,
jer...

Just say 'no' to Champion! The one on Calle de Toledo truly blows. They have eliminated practically all of the Spanish brands and replaced items with the Champion brand, which for many things is of a very poor quality. Their fruit, meat and fish are terrible!

We shop almost entirely at mercados and other little stores and then do a monthly order of 'heavy stuff' from El Corte Ingles, which is still cheaper than the dreaded and crappy Champion. They deliver for a small fee (jer--do you tip the delivery person?) I'll have to check out Carrefour to comparison shop.

If anyone wants a tour of our favorite puestos in the Mercado de la Cebada (or other food spots around the hood), let me know. Most markets are best on Friday afternoon and Saturday morning, when all of the puestos open. When I have time, maybe I'll do a little write up on my favorite neighborhood spots.

There's another tiny market further down C/Toledo where the Dia is. There is one puesto--the wild mushroom guy--at Mercado de San Miguel that is worth going out of the way for.

yes, always. mostly due to the...

1) impossibility of parking anywhere near our apt.
2) 99 steps up to our apt.
3) i used to deliver pizza back in u.s.a. and know it is nice to get a tip big grin

i always give him a 2 or 3 euros.

Yessss!!! Delivery! This is a great suggestion. Plus I've always liked Carrefour more than other supermarkets. How much do they charge for the delivery (aside from the tipping)?
