I need your help! I have begun planning my next trip for next December. I plan to rent a car and drive from Oviedo to Gijon, Ribadesellas, Cangas de Onis, Covadonga, and back to Oviedo. Since it is December and the Picos de Europa are quite high, I wanted to ask if any member has driven through that area lately and is it safe in December? Yes, I am the coward of the county ! I live in Florida and most of it is just at or below sea level! So I have no experience in driving though mountains.
On the edge of my seat to hear from you!

I have been to this province several times, infact was just there 2 weeks ago. Oviedo, Gijon, and Aviles plus +++... Total travel time from Madrid to Oviedo is 5 1/2 hours with no problem at all. Take A-6 to La Corua turn right at Benavente and then turn left before entering Leon and next stop is Oviedo. Want to know how much you have to pay for toll?
Maybe you should include Candas just about 9 kilometers from Gijon. You can check out the senda del Oso in Teverga which is a 15 kilometer walk around the wilderness. You can also rent a bike. This place is a parque national and is 40 kilometers from Oviedo.

The route you plan is fairly straightforward although the road from the monastery in Covadonga up to the lakes can get snowed up and it can also be icey although 'La Vuelta' cycles up it every summer. Check out LLanes, Lastres and Luarca.

The drive is beautiful - but during December there's going to be SNOW, ICE & wind - and no matter how well maintained the roads and snow shoveling equipment is - driving can be sheer agony. I understand your concern as having spent most of my life in Hawaii and California and the thought of driving in snow in Boston is unappealing. Probably I should add also unsafe for the other drivers as they know how to drive in snow and I don't have the skills. Same applies to your situation. Suggest you check with a couple of people who make that drive during the worst of weather and get their feedback.

Thank you Friends, I really appreciate your advice. I have come to the conclusion that with my driving skills I would be foolish to drive under those conditions, particularly in the Picos de Europa area, unless it happens to be a mild winter. I will have to look into taking public transportation to visit Covadonga.
Thanks so much.
