Hi,

I wanted to know if anyone knew how much the Spanish authorities would charge if I was to bring my 800cc motorbike with me.

Or how much it would cost me in tax for me to buy a motorbike whilst living in spain but bought in Italy where availability and prices are better...

Thanks in advance!

Hey dakang, welcome to the group Big Grin

If you ride your bike in from the Netherlands you will not be charged tax on it at the border or anything like that. If you are here for any long period of time however, you will want to "matricular" (register) your bike here with the "Jefatura Provincial de Trafico" and get Spanish plates and that carries a tax called "impuesto de circulacin" and applies to all motor vehicles on the road. The tax is a yearly fee. The tax varies depending on where in Spain you register it but

For cars, here are some samples for this year:

 Melilla = 18.75 euros.
 Madrid = 50.95 euros.
 Barcelona = 68.15 euros.

For a 600cc bike, the tax fees this year are as follow:

 Melilla = 16.66 euros.
 Madrid = 42.85 euros.
 Barcelona = 60.58 euros.

So you see, it can vary widely dependingon where you decide to register it. For bikes, price goes up with CCs (engine size).

FYI: the huge difference between Melilla and Madrid & Barcelona is the fact that the taxes in Melilla, Ceuta and the Canary Islands are much lower than the rest of Spain. For example, normal sales tax there is 4% compared to the 16% on the mainland.

If you go to Barcelona and pay attention to the streets you will see why it is the most expensive place to have a bike on the road. THERE ARE SOOOOO MANY OF THEM! The city is also much more Motorcycle and Scooter friendly than many other cities in Spain with loads more parking spots for bikes than average.

Saludos & please come back to this thread and let us know how it all turns out.

Cheers Jer [yin yang]

...ok ...just thinking out loud here... bikes cost peanuts in Italy compared to the Netherlands and the one I want isn't really available much in Spain ...

So..

When I'm living in Spain (hopefully in a few months!), if I was to buy a bike in Italy, ride it to back to Spain, are you implying that the 60 odd euros is ALL I have to pay to have it all legal? I'm only surprised because the Netherlands and England would charge almost 20% of the value of the bike 'just' to import it.

Any tax people here? Confused

I too am a bit confused now but I think that there is a huge diffeence between riding it in as if you were an Itialian tourist and having it shipped in as an import. I can not be sure but I think that riding it in would save you from the huge tax. Sales tax here is 16% and granted if you buy a car in the Canary Islands where it is 4% and try to bring it to the mainland you get taxed the difference to do so hence it is not worth doing.

I hope a tax guy/gal can help us out here.

Saludos,
