Hi everybody!
I will be in Madrid this year studying at Universidad Autonoma and am wondering about getting a monthly metro pass. From what I gather, I will need to take a train from Charmartin to get to the University. I've looked at the metro's website, but am a little confused about the zones. Does anyone know which zones I will need to be able to travel in, how much the passes are, and where to get one? I think it said that I need to bring in my own photo, is a passport size photo okay? Is there a student price?
Thanks!
Laura

Hi Laura, congrats on your impending move to Madrid Big Grin

Yep! With the UAM camput about 15 KM from Madrid, you will need to get Cercanias RENFE there or take a bus.

The line you will need to take is the "C-1 (Alcal de Henares - Tres Cantos)" or "C-7b (Prncipe Po - Tres Cantos)".

According to the UAM website ( www.uam.es ) apparently it takes 25 minutes from Atocha, 21 from the Cercanias station at Recoletos, 17 from Nuevos Ministerios and 11 from Chamartn. They are usually pretty accurate on their estimates so I would take their word for it.

You can see timetables for your trains by CLICKING HERE Big Grin
HERE is the map of xones for Cercanias RENFE. Yuur stop is "Cantoblanco Universidad" which lies in Zone 2, prices for the monthly ticket for all zones are on THIS PAGE Big Grin

As of today, your monthly ticket will cost 17.44 Euros.

Yes, a passport photo is exactly what you will need to get your monthly pass or "abono mensual". You will also need to present some form of officila ID when you go to request the pass, use your passport for this.

RENFE ALSO OFFERS A SPECIAL...

quote:
Trimester Ticket Universidad
To be used daily, for unlimmited trips. Only for students of the Madrid Autonomous University and the University of Alcal de Henares.
... for students. See more on it BY CLICKING HERE. I think this is your best bet (not sure of the price, ask when you get here).

I am pretty sure that you can buy the pass at any Cercanias RENFE station but last I knew it was not instant, they will take a few days to process it after you request a pass and give them your passport photo.

LOADS of busses that make the trip as well, see www.uam.es/presentacion/campus/default_ing.html for details in English.

There are also links to the various public transportation official website in my site at www.multimadrid.com/practical_info/mad_transports.htm

The main website for public transports in and around Madrid is at www.ctm-madrid.es .

Let us know how it goes.

jer...

Quick question,

If you lose your abono, what can you do? Mine must have slipped out of my pocket the other day, I asked someone and they said Id just have to buy another.. so I am just using the 10 viajes billetes until November begins. Is that correct, or is their a way where I can get my abono replaced.

Thanks!! and if anyone is up for an intercambio, let me know.. I need to practice my spanish = )

hi jowilla,

The web page at www.ctm-madrid.es/cgi-bin/SitAbono?idioma= has detailed info on abonos and your question is answered at the page HERE Cool

Here it is below as well...

quote:

Ok, to make a long translation short, by no means will they give you a new (replacement) cupon (monthly ticket) without charging you for it but if, after buying the replacement ticket, the old one should appear, you can present both tickets and will be allowed to exchange one for the next months ticket. For example, if you buy a new one now for October and then find the old one tomorrow, you can exchange one of the 2 for the November ticket. You could also trade it for a "vale" (credit, I.O.U.) to be used on the transportation system or sign it over to someone else to use.

Pretty fair I think Smiler

The information phone #s for the "Consorcio de Transportes de Madrid" are...
