This year I would like to go home for the holidays, but there are so many online ticket agents... Sometimes I fly http://www.air-hitch.org, but this time I am not so flexible with dates. Does anyone here know where can I find a cheap flight from Madrid to Detroit?
I don't mean to hijack your thread, but can you elaborate on your past experiences with Air Hitch. I've heard a lot of stories about "friends of friends" who did it, but I've never actually found someone who did it...
About your question... I've had some good luck in the past checking Iberia and Spanair's online specials every day.

This doesn't help you SpainTutor (sorry!!), but may be of use to someone else http://www.aerlingus.com have some fairly cheap tickets to various US cities via Dublin during December

I've also often heard about courrier fights where you occupy the seat and the courrier company uses your baggage allowance: have to admit I've never done it though.

Or even "Cheap Flights", sorry Jer, couldn't resist
Anyway back to the thread, sometimes it works out a lot cheaper if you fly from the UK, especially as the flights to England are very cheap. Try http://www.cheapflights.co.uk for the best deals from the UK to anywhere!
I spend most of my money on beer and women, the rest I just waste.
In answer to Mariposta above, I have travelled by air-hitch once, and had no problems. Great value flight from NY to LA. But a word of caution... DO NOT, DO NOT, DO NOT, get involved with airhitch.com (without the hyphen!) If you need to know why, email me, and I will point you to a link.
I took Jer's advice and ended up buying a ticket on travelocity.com for a fair price.
Regarding Air-Hitch.org or air-hitch.com (it's the same site): One time I caught an Air Hitch flight from NYC to Madrid on Iberia with an entire middle row to myself. Price? $120 !!!
My friends Jacob and Joel have flown air-hitch to visit me more than once. I will ask them to post their personal experiences here.
SpainTutor and Steve-- When you did Air-Hitch, how did exactly it work? Did you have to go stand-by on lots of different flights until one panned out? Were you able to pick a date or range of dates or do they notify you at the last minute to high tail it to the airport. I'd like to do this this spring, but worry a bit about getting stranded in the US and having to buy a super expensive ticket back to Madrid...

I saw y'all mention Air-Hitch.com in responses to "Cheap Flights back home" and am curious what you can tell me about it. I went to the site and registered but I couldn't quite figure out what I was doing.
What does the LOW MID HIGH pricing indicate?
What EXACTLY does "One-way with confirm seat 24 hours before departure " mean?
Has anyone had any problems with this site or company?
I have a return ticket for Thanksgiving but need to get back to Spain cheaply so this looks like a good option but... I'm wary.
Thanks again, as usual! Jar

1) Low/Mid/High refers to low season/ mid season and high season. The dates are indicated directly underneath the words 'low', 'mid' and 'high'.
2) 'One way with confirm seat 24 hours before deeparture' means, well... a one way flight, with a confirmed seat 24 hours before departure... as opposed to not having a confirmed seat until the plane is about to take off.
Air-Hitch is mostly a standby arrangement, with the passenger being lucky enough to get on the first flight they try, or unlucky enough to have to wait around for the next... or the next. Personally, I have flown standby twice, and have always got onto the first departing flight. A friend of mine failed to get onto his first flight, and had to return to the airport the next day. I'm sure somewhere on their site, Air-Hitch explain the process, and if memory serves, they do guarantee to get you onto a flight within a (three day?) window.
If you're flexible, it's great value. If you have to be somewhere on a particular day, it's not for you.
