Ok, Madrid just got even better (as if it were possible ).
As of today, May 22 2002, the newly extended Metro line #8 is open for business at the station of Nuevos Ministerios.
The new station at Nuevos Ministerios has luggage check facilities as well so you can check your bags while still in the city before you even get on the Metro to the airport.
This will save mega time for many travellers who want to take the Metro to or from the airport since from Nuevos Ministerios the ride is estimated to last only 13 minutes. In general, the new station will save you time on luggage checking, the hassle of having to lug the bags out to the airport and about 20 minutes off of the average Metro ride to the airport
For now you can only check luggage for flights on Iberia a min. 2hrs. and max. 24 hrs before your flight. You can also buy tickets for Air Europa, Spanair and Iberia but other airlines will soon follow.
My question is, can the Metro here get any better?
Of course it can get better, Jer. The web site is now supa dupa fly. I love the map section and how restaurants, ATMs and other sites of interest are listed with the click of the mouse.
I give props where they are due and MetroMadrid is much better then ANY public transportation system here in the US.
Where else can you get on at the Metro Station EL CARMEN and connect to a train that takes you straight to Bilbao in the Basque Region. That's damned impressive.

Also, if you click on the "Facturar Equipaje" button it shows you a cool virtual lesson on checking your luggage at the Nuevos Ministerios station.
Even a little phrase that says "jugar mientras esperas" ("play while you wait") at the bottom, click it, hit the space bar to start and each time you want to jump a bag or suitcase
