Now that I'm home for a while I've decided to take the same curious energy I had for traveling while in Spain and apply it to North America. A while ago I read an article in the travel section of the New York Times about several islands off the coast of Newfoundland that are still French colonies. Although there may not be much to do, the food is apparently exquisite, the scenery is amazing and they even use euros!! (which is kinda wacky if you consider it's a ferry ride from Boston). Anyhoo...I was reading up on the history of the islands and apparently there is a large Basque influence there and in Newfoundland as well! I really have no idea about this history of the Basque people and would have never thought their explorations extended so far (and near!).
The Basques have a huge connection to Newfoundland that goes back centuries (millenia?) for one very key reason--the best cod can be found in the waters off Newfoundland.
