Hi all...I tried to post this on classifieds, but i am still getting a blank page there, so here goes....

I am giving up my juicy english gig. I've been there two years and the students are great as are teh workign conditions.

The hours are
mon, 8-10am and 6-8pm
tues, 6-8pm
wed, 8-10am and 6-8pm
fri, 8-10am
(these are not repeating classes, these are six classes that meet once a week)

I started at 20/hour and am now making more, but a new teacher would start at 20.

Located on Maria de Molina at Velazquez, about half-way between Metro Gregorio Maranon and Avda America.

Classes are:
1 beginner
1 intermediate
4 advanced

TEACHER PROFILE:
-you have experience and your own materials (including listenings--i use my ipod) to teach from. if you just arrived or you are a backpacker teacher doing your thing abroad, sorry this is not for you.
-you have a professional look (at least when working) jeans and shorts not acceptable.
-you like autonomy...the boss will never interfere with you and you will always be paid before the end of the month
-working papers not needed. this is a cash in hand job.

If you are interested or know someone who is, email me privately claballe@gmail.com

I am supposed to leave by Oct 1, but if we find the right person, i'll leave sooner (and you will start sooner)

Thanks!

Candela,

How soon do you need a new teacher? I am arriving on 31 Oct and am very interested.

I'm actually not a new teacher, as I spent 12 months in '06 teaching English in Madrid for all levels from ages 12+. I could be ready for class on Monday, 5 Nov if I knew the levels of each class at which time and approximate amount of students. And I can promise not a one of my students (other than summer camps) have ever seen me in jeans. smiler

Hoping it might be feasible for both of us! Thanks,

Tanya H

This brings up an interesting point which I've been meaning to post. Some thoughts on Teaching English

1. There is way more work than there are teachers, sounds strange but it's almost overwhelming the amount of work out there, it makes it hard to choose what classes to take.

2. Regardless of your working status legal or not most agencies prefer to pay cash, even when they say they want teachers with papers only.

3. Few places play travel costs Tandem pays the most 4 to 10 per class on top of your hourly rate – Training Express pay a flat rate of 15 a month.

4. Demand a decent wage. Hourly rates range from 10-25 an hour average is 14-16 Unless you feel like subsidizing the agency specify a min wage of 15+ an hour. I have a friend who as a first time teacher took a contract paying 10 euros an hour 24 hours a week. I laughed and said you’ll be gone in a few months. Sure enough, she’s already found private clients paying much more.

5. Best time to start looking for work is in early September as you have the pick of the crop, after that you get leftovers, still loads of work just may have be a bit less picky.

6. No kids or if you want to teach kids than make that clear.

7. Send out your CV (resume been here too long big grin)

In hindsight here's how I would have done it.

1. Location North of Madrid only (any bus route from Plaza Castilla)
2. NO KIDS
3. Wage 16 an hour min
4. Minimum 1,5 hour class
4. Travel costs would be a nice extra
5. Gaurnated hours this can be group classes or an agency that plays a flat rate (englishcenter.org does that)
6. Option for a contract once my papers come through.

A note on the hours: policies vary by the agency some places offer guaranteed hours regardless of status (it means you can't cancel classes either when you want to go away) others pay only by the hours taught. This is most common. The problem with this is cancellations can kill your paycheque. A simple way around this is to take group classes only or if you have 10n1 ask the student to cancel the day of so you get paid.

DH has 8 years of teaching experience and would like to teach here, but is not a native English speaker - he´s Madrileño.

Any agencies or schools who use non-native teachers?

Thanks!

I've run into numerous non native English teachers so it’s not a proboem, most thought tend to stick to lower level classes (intermediate and below). I would simply downplay that part.
